| These three pictures span the 10 seconds or so of time when I nearly lost my life taking these photos. I was standing on Cadigan's Lane in Logy Bay, looking eastward and photographing the TARGA cars that were coming along Marine Drive from the north. Car 804 passed by normally, then car 806 approached. Instead of following the eastward curvature of Marine Drive, the vehicle headed directly toward me. As seen by the centre image, I failed to snap a usable photo of the fast approaching car but I did live to tell about it as the car passed just a meter or so to my right. Three men who had been sitting on the ground behind me also came through the incident unscathed. I'll have to credit either the driver, good fortune or the Good Lord with saving me, because I can recall doing very little to get myself out of the way of the oncoming vehicle. In the end, the battery on my digital camera went dead and I therefore failed to photograph all the cars. I'd normally be upset about that but I figure better a dead camera than a dead me! The NTV Evening News for Sept 15th and the Noon news on Sept 16th carried a segment on TARGA, which included a video clip of 'my near-miss'. A freeze-frame from the the NTV coverage of the incident shows just how close I came to disaster. |
