LeRoy Merrill
- also known as "Roy Merrill"; both names are shown on the reverse of
this photograph taken by Geo. M. Shearer photographer. The web
site for the Descendents of Nathaniel Merrill lists a LeRoy Merrill as
being born 1890-06-09 and dying 1894-05-21 with burial listed as in Rathbun Lawn
Cemetery, Irving, Town of Hanover, Chautauqua County. His mother is listed
by the Merrill
web site as Harriet M. Remington, born in Versailles on 1871-07-01 of
parents Seth Remington and Mary Webster. His father is listed as William W.
Merrill, born 1851-04-04 in Dayton, Cattaraugus County. This Versailles
connection for LeRoy's mother could certainly explain why this photograph was
kept all these years with the photos of the Brown's family friends.

Dr.
Peebles is marked on the reverse side of the source photo. This is James
Martin Peebles, a man who was an active participant in the spiritualist movement
during the second half of the 19th century. It is presumed that the Brown
family's interest in spiritualism is the reason that his photograph is amongst the family photos of
Elisha Brown's family. Dr. Peebles was born 23-MAR-1822 in Whitingham, Vermont.
His parents were James and Nancy Peebles. Biographies of Dr. Peebles include: (1)
The Spiritual Pilgrim by J. O. Barrett published in
1878, (2) Dr.
James M. Peebles by John Hubert Greusel c.1911 and (3) A Biography of James Martin Peebles by Edward Whipple, published in
1901. Linda
Pendleton's web site provides a considerable amount of online
information. Page 160
of The
Historical Gazetteer and Biographical Memorial of Cattaraugus County, NY, edited
by William Adams and published 1893, lists "Dr. James W. Peebles" [sic -
middle initial] among the list of "Medical Practitioners of Cattaraugus County". His
entry reads, "James W. Peebles, a graduate of
the American Eclectic College of Cincinnati on October 13, 1869, came to Olean
in January, 1887, but doubtless soon removed."

Dr. W. Ward
- Photograph by F. J. Weber, Photographer, Gowanda, N.Y. Based upon
information from page
110 the Historical Gazetteer of 1893, it appears that Dr. W. Ward served as
various officers of "The Lake Erie Medical Society" including
President, Vice-President and Secretary. The article written in 1941 by Ethelyn
Weller and entitled "North
Collins Remembers" contains the following information about Dr.
Ward. Not only did Dr. Ward move to North Collins from Versailles, but
North Collins was also the home of Elisha Brown's brother Levi
Brown and possibly another brother, Simeon
Brown.
"Dr.
Walden M. Ward, son of Granson Ward, came to North Collins in 1880 from
Versailles, N. Y. He was one of the town's leading physicians until the time of
his death, May 5.1939. He died at the age of eighty after fifty-four years of
medical practice, having served as North Collins health officer for many years.
He was a past president of the Erie County Medical Association. He had two
brothers, Lee B. and Walter; and one son, Worthington C., also a doctor. Lee
married Carrie Baird and they have one daughter, Madeline. Worthington married
Carolyn Falk."
According
to Wally
MacDowell's web site, Dr. Ward's son, Worthington C. Ward,
graduated from North Collins High School in 1903.
