Brown died 29-FEB-1904. At the time of his death, he was one of the oldest residents of the

Briggs, who died in 1895. Levi was born 27-SEP-1815 at Luzern, NY, the son

George
A. Brown, b. 25-MAR-1848, d. 02-APR-1908, was the son of Levi Brown and Lydia
Briggs. Many thanks go out to Mr. Christopher Densmore, Curator, Friends
Historical Library of Swarthmore College, for providing me with a
photocopy of this obituary as well as a photocopy of the Obituary
for Levi Brown (above). The people mentioned as attending the funeral
included "Garrett Briggs, Delevan"
whose family is listed in on Page
174A, Roll T9-0813, 1880 Census, for Yorkshire Twp., Cattaraugus County,
NY. "M.E. Brown, Versailles" refers to Marion
Eliza Brown (nee Hills), who was married to George Brown's uncle, Elisha
Brown, who died 25-AUG-1893. "Prof. Frank Briggs", refers to
Franklin H. Briggs who was Superintendent of the Rochester
Industrial School and subsequently became Superintendent of the Allegany
Industrial School in Madison Twp., Pennsylvania, as shown by his listing on Roll
T625_1513, Page 12A, 1920 census, ED#242, Marshall Twp., Allegany
County, PA. Franklin H. Briggs was the son of Daniel Briggs and his wife,
Maria L. (probably
nee Sheppard), whose family is shown on Roll
T9_826, Page 133A & 123B of the 1880 census, Brant Twp, Erie County,
NY. "Cordie Higley, Angola" was Corydon C. Higley, who is shown,
along with his sister, Nettie Brown, on roll
T625_1110, Page 165B, 1920 Census, Angola Village, Erie County, NY.
This is Nettie L. Brown, George Brown's wife, as shown on roll
T623_1034, Page 16A, 1900 Census for North Collins, ED#257, Erie County,
NY. She is buried next to George Brown in the Levi
Brown plot at the North Collins Hicksite cemetery. "Abial Briggs, Lavonia" was Abial
F. Briggs, who
married Carrie Porter,
and who are both shown on roll
T9_813, Page 178A, 1880 census for Yorkshire Twp., Cattaraugus County,
NY. Their family, including a son, Newton W., and a daughter, Arline P., are shown
on roll
T624_986, Page 192A, 1910 census for Lavonia Station Village, ED#52,
Livingston County, NY and on roll
T625_1122, Page 193A, 1920 census, City of Rochester, NY. It is suspected
that all the Briggs's who attended George Brown's funeral were first cousins of
George Brown and nephews of George's mother, Lydia Briggs, but this conjecture
remains to be proven. The "Emma Train" who wrote the poem for
this obituary (and also the poem for Levi Brown's obituary, above) was a
neighbour of Levi and George Brown as shown in the 1880
census of Evans Twp. Emma and her husband "Benjamin R.
Train" (aka "Russell Train") lived on a 24.5 acre plot of land at
the NW corner of Lot 14. The Residences of both Emma Train and Corydon
Higley's parents were within a mile of Levi Brown's farm, as shown on the 1880 Beers
map of Evans Twp. .
