Charles Samuel Erbland
is the right-most person in this picture. The reverse of the print reads "Picture Taken About 1916 at
Stark
Steel Rolling Mill, a division of Berger
Mfg. Co., Canton, Ohio."
Charles was the "Roller" which means that he was the head of the crew. At
the time of the great
steel strike of 1919, C.
H. Charles was the General Manager of the Stark Rolling Mills. Charles S. Erbland was born 30-JUL-1880 at Canton, Stark County, Ohio. He died
05-SEP-1954 at Canton and was buried at Westlawn cemetery, at Sec Y. Lot
354. He married Nora Emily Linton on 16-May-1901. They had 6 children:
Stewart, Hilda, John Gaylord, Donald, Linton and Alice Marie. The
location of the Stark Rolling Mill is known from the Sanborn
Fire Insurance Maps for 1914. These maps also show the
detailed layout of the position of the rolling machines within the
mill. Even though the roller mill building (which ran in a north and
south direction) was about 260 meters in length, there is only one location
shown on the 1914 Sanborn
maps where the configuration of rolling machines seen in this
photo existed; that is, where two machines were spaced closely together,
flanked by two other machines spaced equally, but farther apart on either
side. From this information, it is deduced that this photo would
have been taken at location N40º 48.317' W81º 20.825' WGS84. This is about 140 meters
ENE of the intersection of Belden Ave. NE and 10th St. NE.

Charles
S. Erbland and his children are shown in these two photos which appear
to have been taken on the same day, along with the one of Linton Erbland and dog

left photo, proceeding clockwise from the upper left, is: Hilda, Linton, Charles (father), John Gaylord
and Donald. The photo on the left, that includes the children's father,
was scanned from the original glass plate negative. In the photo on the right,
