This
Death Notice for August Erbland appeared in The Canton Repository, Dec. 21, 1886, Page 4.
August was working in the moulding department of C. Aultman & Co. at the time of
his death. His job was to carry a heavy laddle, containing molten metal,
from the furnace to the molds. He had a heart attack in the midst of his
work and when he dropped the laddle, the molten metal spilled on him, burning
his leg severely. The cause of death, was attributed to "Disease
of Heart". "C. Aultman & Co." (founded by Cornelius Aultman)
manufactured agricultural equipment, including threshing machines, mowers,
reapers, selfbinders, steam engines, etc.
"C. Aultman & Co." filed on 25-SEP-1865 to do business under that
name and was issued Ohio
Registration No. 31191. An 1893 catalogue was sold on eBay but I have no knowledge of who bought
it..

Mathew
Elder Meek died 08-JAN-1907 and his obituary appeared on page 10 of the
Canton Repository dated 09-JAN-1907. His given name was incorrectly
spelled in the death notice with two "t's"; that is, as
"Matthew". He was living at 1223 South Cleveland Ave.
at the time of his death. (As of 2002, this address is known as 1225
Cleveland Ave. S.W. but the original Meek house is now gone.) The obituary's
reference to "Mrs. Laura Eberland" is thought to be in error. Mathew
Elder Meek was survived by his granddaughter "Mrs. Nora Erbland". Nora
was a blood-related granddaughter and not an adopted daughter, however, Nora's
mother had died when Nora was only 5 months old and Mathew Elder Meek raised
Nora as though she were his daughter. According to the Canton City
Directories, Nora, along with her husband Charles, continued to live with Mathew Elder Meek from the time of their marriage in 1901 until 1907. The
Canton City Directory for 1906-07 (microfilm image #1717), is the last one to
show Nora and Charles living with Mathew Elder Meek at 1223 S. Cleveland Ave.
The Directory for 1907-08, shows Nora and Charles living at 119 Graham, separate
from Nora's grandfather. Mathew Elder Meek also raised another girl as though
she were his daughter. This girl was referred to as "Ida Meek" but her
actual name was Ida
Detimore. According to Erbland family oral history, Ida's parents had perished in a house fire.
It is part of that tradition that Ida was never legally
adopted by Mathew Elder Meek although many people, including her, thought that she had
been. Apparently Ida only learned that she had not been officially adopted
when her blood relationship to the Meeks became part of an inheritance dispute
later in life. In addition to his daughter, Kate Bostick, referred to in the
obituary, Mathew Elder Meek and his wife Nancy Jane Shaffer had three other children
(Sidnah C., Sarah A. and Alice), all three of whom died before their father.
Perhaps the foregoing, somewhat unusual circumstances could be the source of the
apparent error/confusion in this obituary.
