Unknown People

Since the source photos for all of these images are a part of the Brown / Erbland family photo collection, it seems logical to assume that all of these people have at least a tenuous connection with the Erbland or Brown families; even if only as a friend or acquaintance. I admire people who rescue old photographs from flea markets and garage sales but that is not the source for these images. These images are all from Erbland/Brown 'family photos' that were never properly marked. Let this be a lesson to you. Run — don't walk —  to your own family photo collection and mark them all now! If you can help us identify any of these people, or if you simply want to offer an opinion about "who looks like who", please send us an email.  Incidentally, we believe that all of these images are of people who lived in Ohio or are of friends and acquaintances of people who lived in Ohio. There is another group of unknown pictures that we believe are associated with people who lived in Versailles, NY.  It is possible, however, that some pictures from the former category are mixed into the later category  and vice versa.  You may therefore want to also look at the Unknown images on the Versailles pages.

Unknown "A" - The back of this picture has a stamp that says "H. Golden, 158 W. 48th St., New York City."  It is possible that this might be the opera singer Magdalena Miller (nee Erbland), although this thought is total conjecture without any proof.

Unknown "B" - The back of source print says only "2872 E and G W. Matt. 50" in pencil.  Notice the shadow of the photographer. The flash holder is rectangular, indicating that it was the type that used 'flash powder'.  It is not 100% certain that this photo is from the Ohio portion of our family history but we suspect that it is given that it was mixed in with other pictures pertaining to Ohio.

Unknown "C" - There are no markings on the original picture that served as the source for this scanned image.  The source picture is 8"x10". Donna Leyda (nee Erbland) thinks that the woman on the left looks like she could be a Bostick or Detimore, with a particular similarity to Helen Bostick.

Unknown "D" - The source drawing for this scan is mounted on cardboard and looks like a pencil drawing; a very well done one at that. "Belongs to 20 x 24" is all that is written on the back in pencil. The original is 10½" x 14".

Unknown "E" The frame reads, "P Rief, CANTON, O."  Is there any chance that this is the same woman as on the extreme left in Unknown "N"?

Unknown "G" - The frame on this photo reads, "VIGNOS ART GALLERY. 108 - 110 W. TUS. ST. CANTON. O."

Unknown "H" - The frame reads, "The Nyemeaz Studio, CHESTER PA." Is this photo associated with Unknown "I" and Unknown "J", given that they were taken at the same studio? Is this the same person as in Unknown "V"?

Unknown "I" - The cardboard frame that contains the source photo reads, "The Nyemeaz Studio, CHESTER PA." Is this photo associated with Unknown "H" and Unknown"J" given that they were taken at the same studio?

Unknown "J" - The frame reads, "The Nyemeaz Studio, CHESTER PA." Is this photo associated with Unknown "H" and Unknown "I", given that they were taken at the same studio?

Unknown "K" - The outside of the cardboard picture frame reads, "Albert Jones, CINCINNATI O". The name written in the right margin also appears to include the surname "Jones".  It is probably the photographer's name rather than the subject's name.

Unknown "L" - This Unknown Couple is probably Erbland related, because the woman appears to be same person as on the extreme left in the group photo of 5 women that includes Clara Erbland (nee Pollock).

Unknown "M" - This woman appears to be the same woman who is 2nd from the left in Unknown "N" seen below.

Unknown "N" - The woman 2nd from the left appears to be the same woman who is shown with the baby in Unknown "M" above.  In addition, is it possible that the woman on the extreme left is the same woman as in Unknown "E"?

Unknown "O" - There is no information available about this image other than the source photo is printed on a postcard, as was typical for that era.

Unknown "R" - There are no identification markings or notations of any kind on the source photo. The image on the right is just an enlargement of the source photo shown on the left.  Is it possible that the woman on the extreme right of this photo could be Anna Gerber, Charles Erbland's mother?

Unknown "S" - The source image is on postcard stock, as was common for this era. The postcard stock is marked "THE FAIR POSTAL STUDIO, CHICAGO", That does NOT mean, however, that this photo was taken in Chicago. There is also a very faint pencil marking on the reverse side that reads "1864". This marking is so faint that it does not look exactly like the identifications comments written on the other photos.  I can therefore not be confident if this is the year of this photo or if it might be a number put there for some other purpose.

Unknown "T" - The cardboard frame that holds the source photo is marked "Parker Studio, Canton, O." There is no other identification. Obviously, the source photo is hand-coloured.

Unknown "V" - There is no date or name on this picture.  The cardboard frame holding the source photo is marked "White STUDIO, NEW YORK". Is this the same person as in Unknown "H"?

Unknown AB - Woman wearing glasses. There are no identification markings on the source photo other than the studio markings on the front frame of the photo: "Miller, Room 21, Saxton Block, Canton, Ohio."

Unknown AC -The only marking on the source photo is the front border photographer's information that reads: "Wissler Cor. Mkt. & 10^th St. CANTON, OHIO."

Unknown AD - There are no identification markings on the source photo other than the photographer's studio information, which is stamped on the back and reads, "Courtney CANTON, OHIO."  Notice the chain necklace — it looks like 'real' chain to me!

Unknown "AI" - Three unknown men. The caption reads, "All, Fred and Herman".  Is there any chance that the two on the right could be Fred Erbland and Herman Erbland?

Unknown "AJ" - Could this be the same man as in the center of "AI"?  Or is this man standing in the extreme back row of the Erbland group photo?
