Photos of Unknown People

The following images are of unknown people.  They were all stored with the other family photographs from Versailles, NY, and the clothes look like the pre-1906 era when my mother's family lived in Versailles, so I suspect that the photos are of people from that area.  Please email us if you know who any of these people are. Incidentally, we believe that all of these images are of people who lived in Versailles, NY or are of friends and acquaintances of people who lived in Versailles. There is another group of unknown pictures that we believe are associated with people who lived in Ohio.  It is possible, however, that some pictures from the former category are mixed into the later category  and vice versa.  You may therefore want to also look at the Unknown images on the Ohio pages.

#4 - "Friends in So. Dayton N.Y." is written on the back of this photograph. This means fiends of the W.L. Brown family from Versailles, NY.

"Versailles Group" is marked on the the source photo, which is a 5"x7" glass plate negative, a scan of which was provided to JustUs by Mr. Phil Palen. The image is used with his permission. Unfortunately, the only people Mr. Palen can identify are Winfield Scott Thrasher (man standing at left) and his wife, Mary Allen Thrasher (seated, white blouse, second row). Based upon the photograph's caption, the others are presumably from Versailles. The Thrashers lived in Dayton and in the 1880 census for the Village of Dayton (Pg. 19, Supr Dist. 11, Ennum. Dist 7), Winfield S. Thrasher is listed as age 33 and his wife as age 31. The 1880 census also shows 4 of their children (thought to be 10 in total), Norman S. 9, Alice M. 8, Flora G. 6, John Ward 3, and Allen S. 1. Winfield's occupation in the 1880 census, is listed as "Lawyer". He was, in fact, a prominent lawyer and Cattaraugus County judge. Based upon the census ages, I would date this photo c. 1895, although others may choose to date it differently. It is thought that Winfield Thrasher was the photographer. This photo has been placed here in the "Unknown" section in the hopes that someone can identify the other people, at least some of whom are presumably from Versailles.  If you can, please email us.
